When the bladder dictates everyday life
Scarcely any organ intervenes so directly in everyday life as the bladder. Frequent urinary urgency, burning, or involuntary loss of urine are limiting and are nevertheless often accepted, out of habit or shame. It need not be so. Most bladder problems can be treated well once the cause is known.
Bladder cancer
The most important warning sign is blood in the urine, often painless and sometimes visible only a single time. Precisely because it occurs without pain and disappears again, it is easily overlooked. Visible blood in the urine should always be investigated, even if it occurs only once. We examine the bladder with a gentle cystoscopy and secure the diagnosis. On stages, surgical treatment, and the further therapies read in the Bladder Cancer section (already available).
Cystitis and recurrent urinary tract infections
Burning on urination, frequent urgency, and pain above the bladder point to a cystitis. A single infection is usually treated quickly. But if the infections keep recurring, we search for the cause, instead of merely catching each flare individually with antibiotics. Behind it can lie residual urine, stones, a drainage obstruction, or hormonal changes.
Irritable bladder and overactive bladder
A constant, sudden urinary urgency without a detectable infection, often with nocturnal urination, characterizes the overactive bladder. The complaints are burdensome but readily treatable, from bladder training and pelvic floor therapy through medication to modern procedures such as the injection of botulinum toxin into the bladder wall in stubborn cases.
Urinary incontinence
Involuntary loss of urine has different causes, and the treatment is guided by them. In stress incontinence, urine passes on coughing, sneezing, or lifting, because the closure gives way. In urge incontinence, the loss comes with an uncontrollable urge. Frequently a mixed form is present. We classify the form precisely, because on that depends whether pelvic floor training, medication, or a surgical procedure is the right path.
Bladder pain syndrome (interstitial cystitis)
Some patients suffer from bladder pain and urgency without an infection being demonstrable. Bladder pain syndrome is hard to pin down and is often recognized late. We take the complaints seriously, delimit other causes, and put together a treatment that combines several approaches.
Bladder stones
Stones in the bladder usually form where the bladder does not empty completely, such as with an enlarged prostate. They cause urgency, pain, and blood in the urine. We remove them endoscopically and at the same time treat the cause of the emptying disorder, so that they do not recur.
