Before the Inpatient Stay

Before your stay, there are a few organizational and medical points to observe so that the process runs as smoothly as possible for you. As a rule, an outpatient, video-based, or telephone consultation has already taken place, so that many documents are already on file.

If any documents are not yet on file, please send them to us before your hospital stay:

  • New test results and findings since the consultation
  • Imaging data (CD/DVD or download links), in particular MRI of the prostate or PSMA-PET scans (skeletal scintigraphy is not required)
  • Result of a glaucoma examination or measurement of intraocular pressure (if available)
  • Fully completed questionnaires

A complete list of all regularly taken medications is required, for example in the form of a Bundesmedikationsplan (German national medication plan).

If you take metformin, it must be discontinued two days before the operation.

<p>Blood-thinning medications must be discontinued or replaced in good time. This concerns in particular long-acting medications such as phenprocoumon, acenocoumarol, or warfarin, and oral anticoagulants (OACs, e.g., apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran). When discontinuing blood-thinning medications, a switch to heparin products injected into the subcutaneous fatty tissue is required, depending on the situation and in consultation with your general practitioner or internist. ASA up to 100 mg daily may continue to be taken.</p>

Yes, please bring your home medication with you.

With full private insurance, the costs are covered in full. With other forms of insurance, full or partial coverage is often possible. Before treatment begins, you will receive a cost estimate.

In the case of acute illness (e.g., infection, fever, shortness of breath), please inform the clinic immediately. The operation may then have to be postponed.

Where appropriate, an MRSA swab is taken. If the surgery date is more than four weeks in the future, the test can also be carried out at home.

Please inform the clinic as early as possible so that the appointment can be reassigned if necessary.

Physical Preparation

Recommended are endurance training, strengthening of the core musculature, weight reduction in the case of overweight, and a balanced, nutrient-rich diet.

A diet with a high micronutrient content is recommended, for example vegetables, legumes, onions, mushrooms, berries, and nuts. Highly processed foods should be avoided as far as possible.

Yes, particularly to improve early continence. The training should ideally be started before the operation. You will receive a link to a video in which the exercises are explained step by step.

Stopping smoking is strongly recommended, as smoking increases the risk of complications.

Before certain operations, cryopreservation of semen may be advisable.

The clinic is centrally located in Düsseldorf. A paid underground parking garage is available. Optionally, a chauffeur service can also be used.

Single and double rooms as well as suites are available. All rooms are comfortably furnished to a high standard.

Nutrition is an integral part of the clinic’s treatment concept.

Catering is provided by the in-house restaurant “Chez la Belle,” which operates under the motto “The upper level of healthy food.”

A healthy and balanced diet is offered. In doing so, the clinic places particular emphasis on:

  • the use of high-quality organic products
  • the avoidance of wheat flour
  • the avoidance of sugar
  • the avoidance of preservatives and additives

The aim is to preserve valuable ingredients and vitamins in the dishes and to support general well-being during the inpatient stay.

  • vegan dishes

This accommodates different dietary preferences and ensures comprehensive, health-oriented catering.

Comfortable clothing is recommended. Please bring your personal toiletries; everything else is provided by the clinic.

Check-in and Admission

Inpatient admission usually takes place the day before, between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If you live nearby, check-in on the day of surgery is possible as an alternative.

Blood is drawn, surgical informed consent is obtained, an anesthesia consultation is held, and nursing preparation is carried out.

Day of Surgery

If necessary, shaving is carried out by the nursing staff. Bowel preparation is not required. Water or tea may be drunk up to two hours before the procedure.

After surgery, you are monitored in the recovery room. Eating, drinking, and initial mobilization take place as early as possible.

The Time After the Operation

On the first day, mobilization takes place, along with pain management if needed, blood draws, ultrasound if needed, and removal of lines or drains.

The pain level is assessed regularly, and medication is adjusted accordingly.

A temporary impairment of bowel function is normal. Mild laxatives can be used to provide support.

Depending on the situation, drainage is provided via a urethral or suprapubic catheter. The further course of action is decided by the surgeon.

Discharge and Follow-up Care

Discharge takes place at the physician’s discretion, usually by 10:00 a.m.

Regular urological follow-up examinations are necessary. In the case of cancer, these initially take place every three months. The examinations are carried out by your urologist.

Yes, before departure a (preliminary) medical report is handed to you and sent to the physicians providing your continued care.

Continence and Sexual Function (specific to prostate operations)

Most patients achieve good continence early on. In some cases, however, stabilization can take weeks to months.

Orgasm and sensation are preserved; ejaculation no longer occurs. The recovery of erectile function can take time.

Follow-up Rehabilitation and Further Support

Depending on the operation and with appropriate insurance, follow-up rehabilitation can be arranged, which includes, among other things, physiotherapy and psycho-oncological support.

Questionnaires serve quality assurance and contribute to improving treatment outcomes.
